Nel 1974 Carl Douglas lancia Kung Fu Fighting, canzone omaggio alle arti marziali che diviene una hit internazionale, vendendo 10 milioni di dischi in tutto il mondo. Essa si aggiudica il primo posto nel Billboard Hot 100, nel UK Singles Chart, in Irlanda,in Australia, in Canada, Francia, in Sud Africa, Germania, nei Paesi Bassi ed in Austria. Ottiene, inoltre, ottimi risultati in Svizzera, in Italia e in Norvegia. Kung Fu Fighting è stato uno dei primi brani della disco music, genere musicale molto in voga negli anni ’70. Tra i suoi più famosi interpreti, oltre a Carl Douglas divenuto celebre grazie a questo brano, ricordiamo i Bee Gees, Barry White, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor e Gli Abba. In un primo momento Kung Fu Fighting doveva essere il lato B di I Want to Give You My Everything di Larry Weiss. Kung Fu Fighting negli ultimi 20 anni è stata inserita nelle colonne di Mai dire ninja (Beverly Hills Ninja), film del 1997 diretto da Dennis Dugan, Shaolin Soccer – Arbitri, rigori e filosofia zen, film del 2001 diretto da Stephen Chow e Kung Fu Panda del 2008, diretto da Mark Osborne e John Stevenson. Il Kung Fu, come viene ricordato in una stoffa della canzone: “è un’antica arte cinese”. Carl Douglas è un cantante e attore di origine giamaicana, nato il 10 maggio 1942 a Kingston.
